“Au pair” placement in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg the « au pair » placement is defined as as a temporary stay of young people, aged between 18 and under 30 years, coming from abroad within a host family.

The main aim of this program is the cultural exchange that both, the young au pair and the host family are benefiting from.

The au pair program should be an enriching experience to the young au pair and in addition to this, gives him the opportunity to improve his language skills and to get to kow a different culture. The host family provides the young au pair with food and accomodation within the family and also offers him language courses as the opportunity to participate in cultural activities.

On the other hand, the host family has the opportunity to welcome a young person coming from abroad as a full member of the family for a limited duration up to 12 months in a row. While the young au pair participating in the daily family tasks isn't the main goal of the stay, the family benefits from the support that the young a pair provides in overseeing the host families children as in fulfilling light household chores.

In order to guarantee a secured framework to both of the parties, the law of the au pair placement from the 18th of February 2013, on basis of the amended Act of 1 August 2018, determines the conditions and modalities to comply with. The Law conferres a special status to the young au pair. The conditions set by the labour code can't be applied in the case of an au pair.
